The Fraele Towers
Perched on a cliff overlooking the valley below, the Fraele Towers are one of the most breathtaking and unmissable sights in Valdidentro, just a few minutes from Hotel Cardo.
These two imposing medieval structures, dating back to the 14th century, once stood guard over the Fraele Valley and the Cancano Lakes, a strategic point along the ancient trade routes to Switzerland.
Today, these spectacular towers attract tourists and cycling enthusiasts eager to tackle the legendary hairpin bends of the road climbing from Pian del Vino, or to reach them via the Decoville trail, a panoramic dirt track offering unforgettable views.
An e-bike adventure not to be missed – on road and off road
A visit to the Fraele Towers is a must during your stay at Hotel Cardo. Thanks to its strategic location and the convenient in-house e-bike rental service, everyone – even less experienced riders – can enjoy the thrill of climbing this iconic route and experiencing up close one of the most fascinating historical landmarks in Valtellina.
From Cardo, you can choose between the main road – featured in recent editions of the Giro d’Italia – or the scenic Decoville dirt path, perfect for off-road lovers.
The climb along the iconic hairpins
If you choose the paved road, in just ten minutes from Hotel Cardo you’ll reach the start of the climb, either from the Isolaccia side or, by extending the route slightly, from the more iconic Pian del Vino.
The first part of the ascent is the toughest, so it’s important to manage your energy (a hearty breakfast at the hotel is highly recommended!) and your e-bike battery. Each kilometer is marked with a sign indicating the average gradient for the next 1,000 meters: you’ll notice that as you climb higher, the slope decreases, allowing you to fully enjoy the stunning views opening up in the final stretch.
The last part of the ascent features the famous series of switchbacks, ending with a short tunnel that leads you right at the foot of the Towers – the perfect spot for a well-deserved photo.
From Cardo to the Fraele Towers along the Decoville
For those who prefer off-road adventures, the trail from Hotel Cardo to the Fraele Towers is simply unmissable.
It starts with a 15-minute uphill dirt section – a little effort that’s well rewarded when you reach the Decoville, a panoramic trail suspended between sky and valley, with breathtaking views over Valdidentro, Bormio, and the majestic Cima Piazzi.
From here, the route continues gently across the Cancano Lakes area – two artificial reservoirs built in the 1950s for hydroelectric production. Today, they are a beloved tourist destination thanks to their turquoise waters and spectacular alpine setting.
After passing the lakes, a short final stretch leads you directly to the Fraele Towers, where you can once again take in the sweeping views.
For those curious to learn more about these historic constructions, there are guided tours of the West Tower every Monday until September 8.
